The Minister of Foreign Affairs held contacts in New York, 24 September 2012

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, continued her contacts in New York, Monday, 24 September on the margins of the General Assembly of the United Nations, with separate meetings with the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Mr Jan Eliasson, and the Minister of External Affairs of Sri Lanka, Mr G.L. Peiris.

With Mr Eliasson, the Foreign Minister discussed the current situation of the Cyprus problem and briefed him on Turkish threats and provocations.

During the meeting with Mr Peiris, Dr Kozakou-Marcoullis informed him about the situation on the Cyprus problem and the standstill existing due to the intransigence of the Turkish site. Moreover, Sri Lankan-EU relations were also discussed, in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU. The Cypriot Foreign Minister invited her Sri Lankan counterpart to visit Cyprus and he accepted the invitation.

Furthermore, Dr Kozakou-Marcoullis attended yesterday a ministerial breakfast organised by the Netherlands, in the framework of the High-Level Meeting on the Rule of Law. Later, she participated in the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Rule of Law.

Yesterday afternoon, the Minister participated in the High-Level Event on the Year of Sustainable Energy for All, an initiative launched by the UN Secretary-General, which is being strongly supported by the EU.

Dr Kozakou-Marcoullis had also a meeting with the President of the International Peace Institute (IPI), Mr Terje Rød-Larsen, with whom she discussed the Cyprus problem and the recent developments in Cyprus. The IPI deals with all the international problems and issues being on the agenda of the UN Security Council and shows strong interest, inter alia, in the Cyprus problem.

Last night, the Cypriot Foreign Minister attended a ministerial dinner that was jointly organised by the United Arab Emirates, Luxemburg and the IPI, on the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
