Mr. President,

Allow me to congratulate you on your election as President of the 67th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations and express my delegation’s support to you in discharging your duties. I also wish to express my sincere appreciation to your predecessor, H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, for the excellent way in which he conducted the work of the 66th Session of the General Assembly.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Secretary General for his report on the work of the Organisation.

Mr. Secretary General, Mr. President, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today’s meeting is held against the background of the recent worrying developments in the world and massive abuses of human rights.

The rule of law is a fundamental principle upon which the European Union is based. As the country currently holding the rotating Presidency of the Union, I wish to highlight that this is a guiding principle of all of the EU’s internal and external action.
