In his opening statement the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General of the UN on the Cyprus Problem Mr. Alvaro de Soto said the following:” As it is well-known consultations have been underway for some time in order to put talks on the Cyprus problem back on track.  As part of these efforts in which many have contributed the Secretary-General met last week with his Excellency Mr. Rauf Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot leader. President Clerides on the UN peace process

Speaking to the Press on August 24, President Glafcos Clerides said that he would assess the situation when the stance of the Turkish Cypriot side becomes clear, if and when UN Secretary General Kofi Annan calls fresh talks. “It appears that Turkey has exerted pressure on Mr. Denktash (leader of the Turkish Cypriot community) to return to the negotiating table,” President Clerides said upon his return from his holidays, adding that Denktash’s readiness to negotiate or not will emerge soon. I made clear to your colleagues when I arrived at the end of last week that I did not have any great expectations during this particular visit and not surprisingly I have no breakthroughs to announce at this time.
