Ambassador Andreas D. MAVROYIANNIS

Mavroyiannis has been the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations since July 2019. At the same time, he retains his functions as the Negotiator of the Greek-Cypriot community in the inter-communal talks on the settlement of the Cyprus problem, a position he has served in since 1 September 2013.

Ambassador Mavroyiannis has been involved full time in the Cyprus peace process, which is conducted in the framework of the United Nations Secretary-General’s good offices mission in Cyprus, since 2013. Between 1 March 2013 and 31 August 2013, he served as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus.

Between October 2011 and January 2013, Ambassador Mavroyiannis was Deputy Minister to the President of Cyprus, for European Affairs. His portfolio included the overall responsibility for preparing and running the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second semester of 2012, representing the Cyprus Government to EU Institutions, presiding over Council formations, as well as representing the Presidency and the Council before the European Parliament.

Ambassador Mavroyiannis joined the Foreign Service of Cyprus in 1987. He has served as Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the European Union (2008-2011), Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations in New York (2003-2008), Ambassador to France (1999-2002), and Ambassador to Ireland (1997-1999). He was a member of the Greek-Cypriot negotiating team in the Cyprus peace process between 2003-2008 and he served twice as the Foreign Minister’s Chef de Cabinet, between 1995-97 and 2002-03.

During his tenure as Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Mavroyiannis was one of the Vice-Presidents of the 62nd Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (2007-2008) and facilitator on the reform of the Security Council. He served as Chairman of the Committee on Relations with the Host Country between 2003-2008 and presided over various UN Conferences and meetings. Andreas was also the Cyprus candidate for the post of President of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (2016-17).

Ambassador Mavroyiannis holds a PhD in Political Sociology (Université de Paris X – Nanterre), a Master (D.E.A.) in International Law, (Université de Droit et de Sciences Economiques – Paris 2), a Master (D.E.A.) in Political Sciences (Université de Droit et de Sciences Economiques – Paris 2), a Diploma in Law (University of Thessaloniki, Greece), and the Diploma of The Hague Academy of International Law.

Ambassador Mavroyiannis is also Adjunct Professor of Public International Law at Frederick University in Cyprus and a member of the European Group of Public Law and of the Board of Trustees of the European Law and Governance School. In 2015, he was awarded the National Order of the Legion of Honour (Légion d’honneur) of the French Republic (rank of Officer). He was made Grand Officer of the Order of Diplomatic merit of the Republic of Romania in 2013. In 2012 he received the Yiannos Kranidiotis trailblazer award.

Born in Cyprus in 1956, Ambassador Mavroyiannis was married to the late Calliopi Efthyvoulou with whom he has a son, Diomides, and a daughter, Athena. He is fluent in Greek, French and English.

Η μισθολογική κλίμακα της θέσης είναι η αρχική βαθμίδα της Κλίμακας GS-5 με ετήσιο μεικτό μισθό που ανέρχεται σε 39,053 Δολάρια Αμερικής.
